The San Diego Chargers did not expect to be looking up at the Denver Broncos in the standings this season. But a combination of injuries to San Diego and superb play from Denver has forced the Chargers to take a back seat in the AFC West.
San Diego hopes that the bye week gave running back LaDanian Tomlinson some time to regain the burst that he has lacked to start the season. Defensively, the team hopes to find a way to stop opposing teams from running wild on them. The Chargers will put up points all season. But the defense needs to force some stops if the team hopes to challenge Denver in the division.
Fist pounds all around for Denver head coach Josh McDaniels. The Broncos have bought into their coach and his system. The results speak for themselves. Denver is dominating on defense and demonstrating impressive efficiency on offense. Kyle Orton has only thrown one interception through five games. He will have to continue protecting the ball against an opportunistic San Diego secondary.
It is awfully difficult to make a case against the Broncos at this point in the season. But this game is more critical for San Diego than Denver. The Chargers will be fired up at home, seeking to close the gap in their division. San Diego will reassert themselves as contenders in this contest.
